Tic Tac Toe Challenge | Lustrous Leaves & Copper Foiling

This month, we have a fabulous Tic Tac Toe challenge, and I couldn’t resist the opportunity to combine some of my favourite techniques with a rather gorgeous colour combination.

I’ve been loving blues and browns together recently, and this project gave me the perfect excuse to bring them together with a little copper sparkle!

Here’s the card I created inspired by this month’s sketch:

🌼My Tic Tac Toe Choices

For my challenge, I chose the diagonal line:

Designer Series Paper → Leaves and/or Pumpkins → Die Cut

Although, as you can see, I’ve managed to sneak in some twine too! That’s the beauty of a Tic Tac Toe challenge: you only need to complete one line, but there’s nothing stopping you from adding a few more elements along the way.

Let’s Talk About Those Leaves!

The star of my card is the beautiful Lustrous Leaves Foiling, and I absolutely love how the copper details work against the blues.

I started by creating the leaf outlines using copper foiling. I then used the coordinating masks to build up layers of colour, blending Azure Afternoon and Balmy Blue to bring the leaves to life.

The copper outlines give each leaf wonderful definition, while the blended blues create depth and contrast.

Once I’d finished colouring, I die-cut the leaves and arranged them into a generous, overlapping cluster to create the focal point of my card.

I love how the different leaf shapes and sizes work together, creating lots of lovely dimension without overwhelming the design.

Building the Background

For the background, I chose the Radiant Foils Designer Series Paper in warm Pecan Pie tones.

The rich brown provides a lovely contrast to the fresh blues, while the subtle metallic detailing complements the copper foiling beautifully.

I cut my main white panel using the Scalloped Christmas Dies. The decorative scalloped edges soften the straight lines of the background and provide a lovely frame for the leaves.

The stitched detailing adds another little touch of texture, and I added a few subtle ink splatters to break up the white space.

The Finishing Touches

A loose bow of natural twine adds a little rustic texture, bringing together the warm browns and metallic copper.

I finished the card with a scattering of metallic gems and a simple sentiment, “Here’s to Another Year”, which I also foiled in copper on a strip of blue cardstock.

I love the contrast between the crisp, modern blues and the warmth of the copper and Pecan Pie. It’s an unexpected colour combination for a leafy card, but one that I think works beautifully!

And, of course, you can never have too much sparkle, can you?
