Welcome to our Tech 4 Stampers blog hop. I am part of an amazing group of demonstrators from around the world who are part of a Tech Academy run by the amazing Louise Sims. Her Website School and Tech Academy helps Stampin Up Demonstrators navigate their way around the world of websites and social media. Now many of us have our websites up and running, a blog hop seemed the next logical step. This month the theme is Sale-a-bration, Yes its that time of year where you have the opportunity to earn some fabulous free Stamp sets, and Patterned Papers (DSP) with a qualifying order. I am still away in Southern Africa so have been a little limited in my choices, but I really hope you like my Birthday card with Watercolour pencils.
Awesome Otters
I was lucky to be able to order this cute Sale-a-bration Awesome otters set as part of my Onstage attendance and I have loved playing with it whilst we have been away.
If you have been following me on my Blog or on Facebook, you will have seen that I am currently on an extended working holiday in Southern Africa.
I have brought some craft stuff with me, but it is very limited so this card worked perfectly and is a fabulous technique for anyone who likes to make cards on the go as it requires very few products.
Birthday card with Watercolour pencils
I made this card on an overcast Johannesburg afternoon, which culminated in a huge electrical storm. The storms here are infamous and we had a great view from our 20th floor hotel room! It is not a quick card, because every element has been coloured with watercolour pencils, but its so worth spending the time.
However this card is much simpler to make than it looks. I have step by step instructions below.
For a change I used some Sahara Sand to stamp and colour on. It gives a lovely textured effect when you add watercolour pencils and there was nothing to worry about the paper pilling as I didn’t use water or a blender pen.
You can see the contrast when you compare the image on the inside of the card. It has been stamped and coloured in exactly the same way, but looks quite different as the basic white has a slight sheen to it and the colour seems to sit on top. I like both effects, but you could could either cardstock and get equally stunning results.
How to make this Birthday card with Watercolour pencils
- Take the piece of Sahara Sand Card (Layer 3) and stamp the Otter image using Tuxedo Memento Ink
- Colour the Otters with the Watercolour pencils – Early Espresso, Cajun Craze, Basic White and Crushed Curry
- Next colour the fish with the Watercolour pencils – Basic Black, Basic White and Basic Grey
- Finally colour the water with the Watercolour pencils – Night of Navy, Pacific Point & Balmy Blue
- Dip the tip White pencil into a tiny drop of water and then use to add a highlight to the stamped waves
- Once dry adhere all the layers together with glue
- Stamp the hat onto the scrap of Basic white using Tuxedo Memento Ink
- Colour with the Watercolour pencils – Real Red & Daffodil delight
- Fussy cut out and add to the card with glue and one Mini Dimensional
- Stamp the sentiment using Tuxedo Memento Ink
- Cut the end at and angle & add to the card with Mini Dimensionals
- Don’t forget to decorate the inside.

Love all the coloring you did. Great job. Now I have to dig out my watercolor pencils. You have inspired me to get them out!
This is too cute Sara, I love how they are all swimming together! Your colouring is fab too.
What a lotta Otters! I must be more adventurous with my colouring techniques – all that colouring must have been a labour of love! I love that you did a comparison, one on coloured c/s and the other on Basic White. Quite a contrast. FAB Tfs. xx
Really beautiful work and a lot of work. All those Otters, and they are so adorable too! Thanks !
